Abstract
The fragmentation of the global data domain is dramatically increasing being one of the major reasons for the 80% data wrangling we need to do in each data driven project. We are wasting huge amounts of funds due to all the inefficiencies in research and industry and the pressure towards convergence is increasing. The question is then at which level can we come to global agreements on convergence and of course we look at the examples of the Internet, the electrification, the Web etc.
To answer this question can only be made if we distinguish areas where agreeing on a common standard does not hurt the dynamics that are needed in the data domain, i.e. we need to differentiate between the data usage and the data provisioning. Data usage will be determined by continuously new methods in analytics (ML, etc.) , in mapping different semantic spaces, etc. Data provisioning will be determined by infrastructures and here some of us see the need for global agreements. The FAIR principles were already a milestones on this road, but they are on paper and not sufficient to achieve the degree of convergence we need. The FAIR DOs are a suggestion of how to put the FAIR principles at least partly into action.
The talk will explain the FDO concept, its relation to the FAIR principles, and indicate running demonstrators.
