Deep Sea Operation - Deployment of the Benthic Crawler Wally

Wally is an underwater deep sea crawler equipped with sensors measuring temperature, pressure, water currents, salinity, methane, turbidity, and the 3D shape of the sea floor. Recently, it was deployed at a cold seep in the Barkley Canyon gas hydrate field at a depth of 870m and connected to the Ocean Networks Canada NEPTUNE cabled observatory network. As part of the project ROBEX, DFKI supported this deployment as well as operates one of its main sensors capable of 3D sea floor mapping using laser. This talk gives an insight about the challenges encountered during deployment and operation.
