Test Center for Martime Technologies on Helgoland (short)
With the foundation of a new test center for maritime technologies, which is the result of a cooperation between the Fraunhofer IFAM and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the existing research activities on Helgoland are continuously expanded. One focus is on robots that can move autonomously both above and below water and can examine structures for damage. The harsh conditions make it necessary for maintenance work to be carried out more and more autonomously in the future, as this can considerably reduce the danger to humans. Since April 23 2020, eight yellow buoys have been marking a research test field three square kilometers in size and 45 meters deep. This unique research area offers scientists and partners from industry the opportunity to develop and test underwater technologies under real conditions.
