Currently spatial information embedded in CT scans is being increasingly used to personalise treatments in medicine by means of computer-assisted surgery (CAS). The field of computer-assisted surgery encompasses virtual surgical planning, 3D printing of personalised constructs such as anatomical models, surgical saw guides or implants, virtual and augmented reality, and robot-guided surgery. These emerging technologies are being sporadically used and are enabling better treatment outcomes and reduced operating time and costs. However, there are challenges faced in computer-assisted surgery that need to be addressed. Our lecture will focus current possibilities and challenges in CAS.
