HASEL Artificial Muscles for a New Generation of Bioinspired, Lifelike Robots

Natural muscle is a masterpiece of evolution enabling biological organisms to achieve levels of agility, dexterity, and adaptability yet unmatched by the most advanced, state-of-the-art robotic systems. The excellent all-round performance of muscle has inspired the pursuit of an artificial equivalent for centuries. This talk presents hydraulically amplified self-healing electrostatic (HASEL) artificial muscles – a promising soft actuator technology, which has the potential to reach capabilities and performance that match or even exceed those of natural muscle. HASEL actuators use electrostatic forces to drive shape change in a soft, hydraulic structure. They are capable of fast, controllable actuation and are able to self-sense their state of deformation.
