The orbit is getting crowded: Although the space is mostly empty, space debris and asteroids in the Earth’s immediate environment are increasingly becoming a concern for the existing assets both in-orbit and on-ground For this reason, the EU funded network „Stardust Reloaded“ investigates different approaches to make future space travel more sustainable and safe – by reducing the amount of existing debris, improving the estimation of collision risks and employing robotics for active debris removal and on-orbit servicing, amongst others. At the second Global Virtual Workshop (GVW-II) of the network in September, the current state of research will be presented and discussed with external experts and students.
The GVW-II will take place digitally from 13 to 17 September 2021 and will focus on the subject of “Space Traffic Management and the Resilient Space Environment”. For this occasion, researchers are invited to submit abstracts of their original work, which will be presented at the workshop and distributed in electronic format accessible to conference attendees. Possible full papers, to be submitted after the event, will be published within a book of Proceedings or within a special issue of a journal associated with the workshop. The submission of extended abstracts as well as the registration for free participation are possible on the GVW2 website. The submission is currently open until 30 June 2021.
The workshop, which the DFKI organises together with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the University of Strathclyde, covers topics such as the space debris environment modelling and risk assessment, detection, characterization, and reduction of space debris, maintenance and construction of large structures in-orbit as well as active removal of debris. Guidance, navigation and control, on-board autonomy, mission operations and communication as well as future trends in the context of space debris and space traffic management are also included in the list of subjects that will be presented by external speakers, researchers from the project consortium and participants of the Stardust-R Challenge.
Two months before the workshop, PhD candidates and young researchers are asked to develop mission scenarios for the removal of space debris or manipulation of asteroids as part of the “Andrea Milani” Challenge. The teams with the two best solutions from each category have the chance to present their solutions at the workshop.
