automatica 2025: DFKI showcases autonomous robotics and flexible production systems
Robotics Innovation Center at the RIG joint stand
At the joint booth of the Robotics Institute Germany (RIG) in Hall B4, Booth 421, the DFKI Robotics Innovation Center will showcase its expertise in developing robust, adaptive robotic systems that operate reliably even under extreme environmental conditions. The focus lies on AI-controlled systems for autonomous exploration, human-robot collaboration, and resource-efficient automation. The researchers will present their work on site through two exhibits: the four-legged rover SherpaTT for rough terrain and the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Dagon for maritime inspections. Both systems exemplify the DFKI research department’s expertise in creating robotic solutions with high autonomy, sensory intelligence, and adaptability.
Additionally, DFKI researcher and underwater robotics expert Dr. Leif Christensen will participate in the panel discussion “Innovation through Cooperation – RIG as the Key to Innovation Strength in Industry” at the RIG booth on June 24 at 11 a.m. Together with other experts, he will discuss the successful transfer of research into industry.
SmartFactory Kaiserslautern showcases adaptive production solutions
Simultaneously, DFKI and its Innovative Factory Systems research department will co-exhibit as part of SmartFactory Kaiserslautern at the Yaskawa booth in Hall B6, Booth 502. The focus will be on skill-based robotics, exemplified by the production island PHUKET — a modular demonstrator for flexible, adaptive manufacturing aligned with Industry 4.0 principles. The island will demonstrate real application scenarios, from intelligent bin-picking and cross-manufacturer real-time communication to dynamic worker assistance and safe human-robot collaboration. PHUKET is controlled by a multi-agent system that flexibly responds to changing production conditions and manufactures various products — such as custom model vehicles — in real time.
With its presence at automatica 2025, DFKI demonstrates how AI and robotics together are setting new standards: for autonomous systems on Earth, in space, and underwater, as well as for future-proof, interoperable manufacturing solutions on the shop floor. Both exhibition areas impressively showcase the potential of application-oriented research for real-world use.
