Intelligent robots are key in future industrial manufacturing. In order to meet the requirements for flexibility in manufacturing and production, robotic systems that are both simple to program and easily adjustable in their use around humans are in high demand. The application-oriented team "Production" aims to develop robotic systems that are capable to autonomously support humans in industrial work settings. One focus is the exploration of intelligent human-robot collaboration in manufacturing scenarios, in which humans and robots work together in hybrid teams without protective fences separating them. Robots developed for this need to be modular, novel and inherently safe, so that they can maintain reliable interactions with humans. On the other hand, such robots need to be intuitive to program, and it needs to be reasonable to put them in flexible manufacturing systems with low number of units. Hence, the team’s key themes are safe human-robot collaboration and intuitive interaction. Another central area of the team’s research is the application of knowledge-based systems in production scenarios in order to improve the robot’s cognitive abilities by feeding data gathered from production processes. Such context-based adaptation plays a significant role in the development of reusable robotic skills regarding perception, interaction, manipulation, and navigation. Another research focus in "Production" is mobile manipulation in intra logistics and production scenarios. Here, the goal is to develop procedures that support robotic systems in dynamic production environments to interact with humans in an autonomous, safe and reliable manner.
