Backbones - Hardware Backbone

The team "Hardware Backbone" develops the hardware for robotic systems in collaboration with the application-oriented teams (Applied AI). At the same time, the team combines knowledge from all the different applications. The team is divided into mechanical design, and electronic design. In mechanical design, components of the mechatronic system that serves as the basis for autonomous robots are being developed. Lightweight construction is a fundamental paradigm of mobile autonomous systems. In order to realize highly dynamic lightweight structures, the team relies on innovative manufacturing processes and new materials.

Electronic circuit design is strongly geared towards the requirements of the particular application. The goal is to find an optimal solution depending on the operating conditions, such as pressure, temperature, radiation exposure and other factors. In addition, the focus is on the demands for energy efficiency, robustness and computing power for artificial intelligence-based technologies. To realize hardware-related software development, the team utilizes current computer architecture and programmable logic.
There is a steady development and evolution of existing components within this team. Important aspects are a modular design, the adherence to technical standards and the verification and documentation of research results.
