System description

The DFKI µAUV was at his time the smallest, fully autonomous operating AUV in the world. It was designed and built for the CeBit 2007 fair in Hannover (Germany), to exemplify how artificial intelligence can contribute to the ocean engineering of the future. The µAUV has four degrees of freedom and has distance measurement sensors on all sides as well as a pressure sensor. On the control side a multi-layered behavior-based control approach is used. The underwater vehicle can avoid obstacles and drive towards signal sources.

Three µAUV systems have been built. After successfully performing in various demonstrations in 2007 and 2008, the last working µAUV was retired from service. Since spring 2010 it is part of the permanent exhibition of the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Parderborn.
