Advanced Robots for ARTEMIS
The project ARA aims to identify and evaluate German robotics and AI technologies for the Artemis missions. Within this (inter-)national collaboration, German expertise in mobile platforms, robotic manipulators, exoskeletons, multimodal user interfaces, and mobile manipulation systems is to be effectively showcased to address the challenges of lunar exploration. The project focuses on analysing intelligent robotic systems that can support astronauts in tasks such as constructing and maintaining lunar bases, enabling scientific experiments, and operating autonomously in the challenging lunar environment. A central component of ARA is the systematic analysis and selection of German technologies with a high technology readiness level to integrate them efficiently into the Artemis missions. For this, the requirements of the Artemis programs are examined, and workshops with leading experts are organized to filter out the most promising technologies.

Project details
The objective of the planned study is to identify and analyze the specific technological strengths of Germany within the context of NASA’s Artemis missions. These missions mark a new era of international cooperation in lunar research and offer Germany the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the exploration and settlement of the Moon through the use of its advanced technologies. The focus of the study is on the areas of robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and autonomous systems. The aim is to highlight the unique capabilities of German technologies, define potential areas of application, and examine and demonstrate how these technologies can be integrated into the demanding requirements of the Artemis missions.
The need for such a study is multi-faceted. A systematic analysis is necessary in order to work out the unique characteristics of German technologies in an international comparison and to foster strategic partnerships.
For the rapid deployment of German technology, it is essential that the study considers technologies with a high level of maturity. The identification and assessment of any existing technological gaps and areas for further development will help to evaluate innovative solutions and prepare them for a selection process. Furthermore, it can be used to specifically advance developments afterwards, with the focus on minimizing further development time as much as possible. In addition, the study is crucial for defining Germany’s role and responsibility within the international spaceflight community. The Artemis missions provide a platform for technological innovation, scientific exchange, and economic perspectives. Through a targeted study, German research institutions and companies can ensure that their technologies not only meet NASA’s requirements but also provide added value for the international spaceflight community. The analysis of German strengths will also create a foundation for future cooperation and investment that goes beyond the Artemis missions.
