AI-REEFSHIELD Thesis Topics

Artificial oyster reef monitoring in underwater environments is crucial for assessing ecosystem restoration efforts that are needed to compensate for building offshore windfarms. Autonomous monitoring by a lightweight AUV remains a technically demanding task. Harsh visibility conditions, varying currents, and limited data availability pose major challenges to both navigation and perception tasks.

Traditional learning approaches generally rely on large amounts available data, require high domain knowledge as well as fast and accurate simulators yet still often fail to generalise sufficiently well and provide uninterpretable black box models.
These and more challenges will be tackled in the research project AI-REEFSHIELD allowing several exciting possibilities for bachelor and master theses in the following fields:

  • Reinforcement Learning
  • Computer Vision/Perception
  • Explainable AI
