Environmental optics in monitoring marine hazards and resources

Marine waters and especially coastal zones are subject to intensive utilization, such as transport, tourism, fisheries and energy generation. The assessment and monitoring of anthropogenic as well as natural threats and changes to the marine environment is crucial to understand their dynamics and to develop sustainable solutions. Recent advancements within platform technologies for monitoring the marine realm opened up ways for integrated strategies, covering relevant dimensions in space and time. A crucial requirement is the availability of fast, reliable, small in size and easy to maintain in-situ sensors on these platforms for long-term operations. These requirements can be matched by optical sensors, taking advantage of molecular inherent properties of water constituents. This presentation will address the needs, potentials, challenges and upcoming technologies to foster the application of optical sensors on autonomous platforms and within operational oceanography.
